How the liquid iron gets into the bottle, and what it has to do with magnetism might need some explaining first. So here goes...
Ferrofluid, (which we also sell as pure liquid) is a solution containing nano iron particles. Just like the iron swarf you know from physics lessons, this substance reacts to magnetic fields. But the liquid forms are way more impressive than the swarf clusters that you used to find on the teacher's desk...
Ferrofluid in a Bottle goes further and puts the fluid into a clear liquid. This way, gravity has less of an effect on your experiments. Hold the enclosed magnet (by its useful handle) to the outer glass and see how the Ferrofluid aligns with the magnetic field. This process creates amazing spiky structures. Change their shape by moving the magnet... Hold it far away or close to the glass.
There's just one magnet included here, but of course you can add a second, third, fourth... to create new figures. Alternatively, you can let the Ferrofluid flow around from one side to the other, skid it and more.
You can choose between 3 different colours: black, blue and gold. Who wouldn't want some gold in a bottle?!
Some other points to note:
- It's not recommended to leave the magnet on the bottle for extended periods of time, like when you're not playing with it, since the ferrofluid might cause stains on the glass when stuck to it for a long time. Just fix the magnet onto the bottle's cap when you're done.
- You should never try to open the bottle (though it's quite difficult anyway) –
as the Ferrofluid can cause bad stains.
- And of course... don't drink the bottle's contents! Ferrofluid in a Bottle comes with a strong neodymium magnet and there's the risk of shards. Therefore, some caution is advised while experimenting with it.
But none of those precautions should prevent you from having a whole lot of fun :).
By the way, Ferrofluid wasn't just invented to entertain us, it has practical uses too. You can find it in hard drives, in speakers and in MRIs. There are also attempts to use it in the field of cancer detection and therapy.
This Ferrofluid stuff is pretty awesome all round!
