All users of a unix-like operating systems (Linux, Mac, BSD, etc) should know what a fork bomb is. A fork bomb is a program which creates so many copies of itself that the operating systems can't create any other processes anymore. The result of this is that the OS becomes unusable and has to be restarted.
A very elegant fork bomb is this shell code: :(){ :|:& };: It was written by Jaromill in 2002 and released by him as an open source piece of art. The code can be explained in the following way: A function with the name of : is created, and this function only starts itself two times. This is done by piping the output of itself to itself. This creates two additional processes which then also creates two new processes and so on. Please be warned: If you run this code in your shell, your computer may crash.
